Formula Feeding

Before you make the decision on how you are going to feed your baby, you should be aware of some of the disadvantages of formula feeding:

  • formula-fed babies are more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal problems, coughs, colds and ear infections.Ìý
  • there is a cost involved in formula feeding
  • errors in sterilising equipment and making feeds can affect your baby’s health

Ìý

If you have been advised to offer your baby formula milk for medical reasons or choose not to breastfeed, please speak to your midwife about paced bottle feeding, responsive feeding and safe sterilisation techniques. You will be offered information and support to help you prepare feeds and sterilise feeding equipment as safely as possible.

If you have chosen to formula feed, in your hospital bag you will need to bring a minimum of two starter packs (each pack contains six x 70ml bottles and six disposable teats) of your chosen milk brand. These starter packs are readily available at all major supermarkets and online.

We will help to support those wanting to use formula and will have a 'milk kitchen' available for those formulas that only come in a powdered format. We will provide microwave sterilisation systems, but no bottles or teats.ÌýWe ask that mothers speak with their Community Midwife for more information.Ìý
