Nicky Boardman - Lead Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
I am the Lead Professional Midwifery Advocate at ºÚÁÏÍø Maternity Unit. Being a PMA is an amazingly rewarding and varied role. I am here to support Midwives and Maternity Care Assistants (MCA's) through the many challenges they can face at work. We have a fantastic team of Midwives and MCA's here at ºÚÁÏÍø, but there are times when work can be difficult and the team constantly work under a certain amount of pressure. I lead a team of PMA's who provide restorative support to maternity staff, to help them feel valued and supported at work. We also champion continuous professional development and quality improvement, working with staff to embed these principles into everyday working life.

Named Midwife for Safeguarding Children
As keeping children safe is the responsibility of all health care professionals, all of our staff are trained in child safeguarding which includes matters such as recognition and referral of child abuse, risk factors, female genital mutilation (FGM), domestic abuse, sharing information and inter agency working. The named Midwife for Safeguarding Children acts as a point of contact should staff suspect that a child may be at risk of abuse or neglect, as well as working with identified families to ensure they have the support in place both before the birth and after their Ìýbaby is born, to enable the parent/s to provide their baby with a safe and caring environment which meets their child’s both physical and emotional needs.
Specialist Mental Health Midwife
We have a Specialist Mental Health Midwife (SMHMW) on site who is available during working hours.
They can provide support at Antenatal Clinic appointments if required. They can support women, along with the allocated community midwife, when planning care, as well as providing women with additional support on the Labour ward, Postnatal ward or on NICU if required.Ìý
The SMHMW liaises with the Postnatal Mental Health Team.
